Developing Global Citizens at Inkberrow Primary School

At Inkberrow Primary School, we are committed to helping our pupils understand the wider world, celebrate diversity, and develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to become responsible global citizens.

We are proud to be working towards the British Council International School Award (Intermediate Level), which recognises schools that promote international learning and global awareness throughout their curriculum. The award supports schools in developing an international ethos and helping pupils understand their place within a diverse and interconnected world.

    Our international work:

    • Learn about different countries, cultures and traditions.
    • Develop curiosity and respect for people from around the world.
    • Understand global issues and social responsibility.
    • Communicate confidently with others.
    • Appreciate similarities and differences between communities.

    Our International Learning Journey

    French Culture Day

One of our most successful whole-school international events was our French Culture Day, where pupils took part in a wide range of exciting activities linked to French language and culture.

    Children explored:

    • French greetings and conversational language.
    • French songs and music.
    • French geography and landmarks.
    • French art and creative projects.
    • French history and traditions.
    • Opportunities to sample French food.

The day allowed pupils from across the school to experience another culture in a fun and engaging way while developing confidence in using a modern foreign language. Through music, drama, artwork and practical activities, children gained a deeper understanding of life in France and the importance of cultural diversity.

    Developing Language Skills

Across the school, pupils are developing their understanding of the French language through classroom learning and enrichment opportunities.

    Examples include:

    • Learning greetings and basic conversational phrases.
    • Exploring colours, numbers and simple vocabulary.
    • Singing French songs.
    • Participating in speaking and listening activities that promote oracy and confidence.
    • Creating artwork linked to French culture and traditions.

    International Links and Communication

Our older pupils have opportunities to broaden their global understanding through communication with children from different backgrounds. These experiences help pupils recognise both the similarities and differences that connect communities around the world.

Upper Key Stage 2 pupils have explored opportunities such as:

    • International communication and pen pal activities.
    • Comparing schools and daily life in different countries.
    • Developing written communication skills for a real audience.

    Global Citizenship in Action

We are passionate about helping children understand how they can make a positive difference in the world.

A recent example was our fundraising work supporting Nireekshana Orphanage in India. Pupils learnt about the lives of children in another country and explored issues relating to equality, opportunity and social responsibility.

    Children demonstrated:

    • Leadership and teamwork.
    • Empathy and compassion.
    • An understanding of global communities.
    • A commitment to helping others.

Through fundraising, communication and reflection activities, pupils developed a strong understanding of how small actions can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

    Pupil Voice

Our pupils tell us that they enjoy learning about other countries and cultures because it helps them understand the world around them.

Some of our pupils have said:

"I enjoyed learning French words because I could talk to people in another language."

"I liked finding out how children live in different countries."

"Fundraising for children in India helped me understand how we can make a difference."

    Looking Ahead

As we continue our International School Award journey, we aim to:

    • Further develop international learning across the curriculum.
    • Strengthen links with schools and communities around the world.
    • Increase opportunities for pupils to communicate internationally.
    • Celebrate global cultures through themed events and activities.
    • Continue to promote understanding, respect and inclusion for all.

Through these experiences, we are helping our children become confident, compassionate and informed global citizens who are ready to contribute positively to the wider world.
