    PSHE: Relationship and Sex Education

At Inkberrow Primary School, our PSHE curriculum plays an important part in bringing our school motto, “Love to Learn, Learn to Care,” to life. We want every child to develop the knowledge, confidence and character they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships, make safe and healthy choices and contribute positively to their community and the wider world.

Our main PSHE programme is SCARF,.

SCARF provides a carefully sequenced, age-appropriate curriculum which supports children’s personal development from Reception to Year 6. Through regular PSHE lessons, children explore themes including relationships, health and wellbeing, keeping safe, rights and responsibilities, emotional wellbeing and growing and changing. These important themes are revisited as children move through school so that their knowledge and understanding develop progressively.

Alongside SCARF, we use an adapted No Outsiders approach to strengthen our teaching about equality, diversity, belonging and respectful relationships. Through carefully selected, age-appropriate books and discussion, children learn that everybody is different and everybody is welcome within our school community. This supports children to develop empathy, kindness and respect for others, while helping them understand the diverse society in which they are growing up.

Our PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum has been carefully considered to ensure that it is appropriate for the age and development of our pupils and reflects the needs and values of our school community. In July 2026, we consulted parents and carers about the content of our RSE and Religious Education curriculum, and this consultation helped inform the curriculum we teach today. We believe that working openly with families is particularly important when children are learning about relationships, growing up, beliefs, values and the wider world.

PSHE at Inkberrow is about much more than individual lessons. It is woven throughout school life through assemblies, our wider curriculum, safeguarding education, pupil leadership, our Aspiration Curriculum and the everyday relationships children build with one another and with adults.

Ultimately, we want our children to leave Inkberrow knowing how to look after themselves and others, confident in who they are, respectful of difference and ready to play their part in the world around them. This is at the heart of what it means to Love to Learn and Learn to Care.
